TownFarms is a project based organization based in Frankfurt am Main - Germany that focuses on the fusion of agriculture with technology. By using retrofit shipping containers, it aims to reach an impact on the food chain of tomorrow.
The project is currently being supported by the Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft and the E.ON Stiftung, which offers the opportunity to young leaders to develop leadership and project skills with sustainability projects on different areas.

The Story behind TownFarms:
When you think about your city, you may think about different scenarios depending on your daily activities.
First, you may want to go you go for entertainmen to a cinema, take a walk on the park or visit your favourite ice cream place etc.
Second, you may think about commuting to work, university or school, for this you refer to that friend that maybe pick you up with a car or the public transport that you use.
and third the supermarket that you visit when you need to cook dinner for your friends or grab your favorite snack.
When you need to prepare your healthy salad or that delicious dish, do you know where the ingredients come from?

The reasons why the greens you consume are damaging the environment:
(2) A high quantity of heating is produced, specially in winter and during this process lots of pesticides are used and these cause a lot of damage to your organism.
(3) An always growing area of land and a higher quantity of water need to be used, just to satisfy the demand from cities, intensifying the use of the other factors as well.
We want to change this! But How?
Introducing Smart Containers into your city would enable to produce the equivalent to an area of almost 6070,28 square meters, which is almost the size of a soccer field with 7140 sqm.
Furthermore, TownFarms will be able to tackle 2/3 of the CO2 Emissions for every green you consume. In the graphic below you can see, that every head of iceberg lettuce produced, we are able to remove the share on transportation and. cooling used in the retail chain.
