Sucre

Founded in 1538, Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia and it is located in the south central part of the Country. The city lies at an elevation of 2810 meters. The high altitude gives the city a cool temperate climate year-round. The city counts with a rich architectural heritage which correlates with a young and dynamic city. 


Cochabamba

Founded in 1571, Cochabamba is a city situated in a valley in the Andes mountain range. The name of the city is a compound of the Qechua words qucha "lake" and pampa "open plain". It is also known as "The Garden City" because of its spring-like temperatures all year round. Cochabamba is among the most economically and socially progressive cities.

 

Tarija

Founded in 1574, Tarija is a city situated in southern Bolivia. From Tarija primary destinations and land routes coincide with the cardinal directions: Paraguay, to the east, Argentina, to the south, Salar de Uyuni to the west and the central cities of Bolivia to the north. Tarija has a semi-arid climate. The summers are warm and generally humid, while in winter the weather is dry with barely any rainfall. One of the main characteristics of the department are the wineyards that it offers, which translate in a high quality wine. 


Santa Cruz de la Sierra

Founded in 1561, Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the largest city in Bolivia and is situated in the eastern tropical lowlands of Bolivia. The metropolitan area and the city are home to 70% of the pupolation of the department. The department ist the most important business center in Bolivia and the preferred destination of migrants from all over the country. The city has a tropical savanna climate with an annual temperature aounrd 23 °C. The months of greatest precipitation are Dcember and January.

 


Oruro

Founded in 1606, Oruro is a city situated between La Paz and Sucre in the Altiplano at approximately 3,709 meters (12, 169 feet) above sea level. Oruro is a city subject to cycles related to its dependence on the mining industry. The city attracts numerous tourists to the Carnaval de Oruro. This event is a religiuos festival and one of UNESCO´s Materpieces of the Oral and Intanglible Heritage of Humanity, which takes place on March 2. More than 48 groups in 18 different folk dances perform a pilgrimage in a traditional parade.


Potosí

Founded in 1545, the city is one of the highes cities in the world at 4,090 metres (13,420 feet). Potosi lies at the foot of the Cerro de Potosi, a mountain conceived as "made of" silver, since it was the major supply of silver for Spain during the period of New World Spanish Empire. Due to its elevation the cclimate is seminarid and with average temperatures of 10° C. Summers are cool and wet with daily highs rising above 20 °C, while winters feature cooler days with much colder nights averaging  -4 °C. 

The Salar de Uyuni is the world´s largest salt flat, with 10,582 square kilometers at an elevation of 3, 656 meters (11,995 feet). It contains 50-70% of the world´s known lithium reserves  and serves as the major transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano. Every November, the Salar de Uyuni is the breeding ground for three species of pink South American flamingo.


La Paz

Founded in 1548, the city is the third most populous city after Sant Cruz and El Alto. The city is situated in west-central Bolivia 68 km southeast of Lake Titicaca at an elevation of 3,640 meters (11,942 feet). Overlooking the city is the towering triple-peaked Illimani at 3,650 meters (11,975 feet) above sea level with its peaks always snow covered. 

The ruins of Tiwanaku are an UNESCO World Heritage Site and represent a Pre-Columbian archeological site in western Bolivia. During the time period between 300 BC and AD 300, Tiwanaku is thought to have been a moral and cosmologiacal center for the Tiwanaku empire.
